little は，very という副詞によって 修飾 されている点では 形容詞 であるが，ate の 目的語 となっている点では 名詞 の働きをしている。

いわばこの little には ２つの顔 があって，前の very に対しては 形容詞 の顔，ate には 名詞 の顔を向けているのである。
