The end of study is not to possess knowledge ＜as a man possesses the coins in his purse＞, but to make knowledge a part of ourselves, that is, to turn knowledge into thought, ＜as the food we eat is turned into the life-giving and nerve-nourishingt blood＞.
学問の目的は、＜人が財布にお金を入れてもっているようなぐあいに＞知識をもっていることではなくて、知識を身につけること、すなわち、＜われわれの食べる食物が活力を与え、気力を養う血液となるのと同じように＞、知識を変えて思想とすることである。
