1. Seventy-one years ago, on a bright, cloudless morning, death fell from the sky and the world was changed. A flash of light and a wall of fire destroyed a city and demonstrated that mankind possessed the means to destroy itself.

2. Why do we come to this place, to Hiroshima? We come to ponder a terrible force unleashed in a not so distant past. We come to mourn the dead, including over 100,000 in Japanese men, women and children; thousands of Koreans; a dozen Americans held prisoner. Their souls speak to us. They ask us to look inward, to take stock of who we are and what we might become.
私たちはなぜ，ここ広島を訪れるのでしょうか。それほど遠くない過去に解き放たれた，恐ろしい力についてじっくりと考えるためです。10万人を超える日本人の男女そして子どもたち，何千人もの朝鮮半島出身の人々，12人の米国人捕虜など，亡くなった方々を悼むためです。こうした犠牲者の魂は私たちに語りかけます。彼らは私たちに内省を求め，私たちが何者であるか，そして私たちがどのような人間になるかについて考えるよう促します。
