【限定】

① 主節に対する限定

❑ As scientific terms go, "climate change" is lame.

（科学用語としては、「気候変動」は説得力がない）

❑ The English are not intellectual, as Europeans go.

（ヨーロッパ人としては、英国人は知的ではない）

② 前の名詞に対する限定（形容詞節）

❑ Apple pie as Dorothy makes it is a work of art.（it = apple pie）
（ドロシーの作るアップルパイはまさに芸術品だ）

❑ Industry as we know it today began in 1765 when James Watt developed the first practical engine.

（今日われわれが知っているような工業は、ジェームズ＝ワットが初めて実用的な円陣を開発した1765年に始まった）

接続詞の as には他にも【時・理由・様態】などいろいろな意味があり、主節と従属節の両方を見比べないと、その意味が決らないことから、確かにやっかいではありますが、いつも意識できれば、すぐに慣れてしまうものです。以下の３つの意味が「きほんのき」です。

【時】

❑ As he became older, he grew more selfish.
（彼は年をとるにつれて，ますます利己的になった）

❑ As I closed the door, the telephone rang.
（私がドアを閉めたときに，電話が鳴った）
 
❑ A good idea occurred to me as I was speaking.
（話しているうちに，名案が浮かんだ）
 
❑ He whistled as he walked.
（彼は歩きながら，口笛を吹いた）
 
【理由・原因】

❑ As my bike broke down, I took a bus to school.
（自転車が故障したので，学校までバスで行った）

❑ I turned off the television as no one was watching.
（だれも見ていなかったので，私はテレビを切った）

【様態】

❑ Do as you were told.
（言われたとおりにしなさい）
