【譲歩】
as (=though) 譲歩の意味を強調する文語的な構文。（程度を示せる）形容詞・副詞・動詞・名詞が文頭にくる。
❑ Old as he is ( = though he is old), his step is till as steady as ever.
（年は取っても、足どりは相変わらずしっかりしている）
❑ Much as I respect her, I cannot agree with her on that point.
（彼女を尊敬しているが、その点では賛成できない）
❑ Try as we would, we could not get him to cheer up.
（どんなにやってみても、彼を元気づけることができなかった）
文頭に無冠詞の名詞を出す次のような構文は、現在ではほとんど使わない。
❑ Child as he is, he can think clearly and act wisely.
（子供ではあるが、考えがはっきりしていて、やることもそつがない）
【その他】
as it is/was (in reality) 前に述べられている希望・願望・などの内容を受けて、「ところが実際には～ではない／なかったので」となる。
❑ We hoped things would go better, but as it is they are getting worse.
（万事好転するだろうと思っていたが、実際はだんだん悪化している）
❑ I wished I had written down her words. As it was, I had to speak from my memory.
（彼女の言葉を書き留めておけばよかったと思ったが、書き留めておかなかったので、記憶に頼って話さなければならなかった）
