to 不定詞 に焦点をあてて
1984年10月に全米１位となった スティービー・ワンダーの名曲「I JUST CALLED TO SAY I LOVE YOU」。当時，南アフリカで人種隔離政策（アパルトヘイト）に反対して投獄されていたネルソン・マンデラへの連帯の気持ちを込めて捧げた曲。
No New Year's Day to celebrate,
no chocolate-covered candy hearts to give away,
no first of spring,
no song to sing.
In fact, here's just another ordinary day.
No April rain,
no flowers bloom,
no wedding Saturday within the month of June.
But what it is, is something true,
made up of these three words that I must say to you.

● to celebrate：形容詞的用法。New Year's Day を修飾。celebrate New Year's Day を基礎とした VOの関係。「祝うための新年」
● to give away：形容詞的用法。chocolate-covered candy hearts を修飾。＜ give away chocolate-covered candy hearts を基礎とした VOの関係。「配るための チョコレートで包まれたハート型のキャンディー）
● to sing：形容詞的用法。song を修飾。＜ sing (a) song を基礎とした VOの関係。「歌うための歌」
● to say ～：目的を表す副詞的用法。完全な文に続く to不定詞は 第一感として 目的を表す副詞的用法と考える。「～と言うために電話しただけさ」
● to light ～：形容詞的用法。harvest moon を修飾。＜ Harvest moon lights ～ を基礎とした SVの関係。「～を照らすための 収穫期の月［中秋の満月］」
● to fly：形容詞的用法。for birds は to fly の意味上の主語。time に続く to不定詞を 形容詞的用法と考える理由は time だから。「鳥が飛ぶとき」
● to fill your heart：目的を表す副詞的用法。修飾先は I just called to say I love you. と考えたいところ。「君の心をいっぱいにするために，I love you って言うために電話しただけなんだ」。
like はここでは接続詞「～のように」。no three words は no other three words と other を補って「他の３つの単語では～ない」。three words は I love you. のこと。could ever do の do は fill your heart の代わりをする 代動詞。ever は否定文で強調を表す。「( I love you 以外の）他の３つの単語では絶対にできないように」
