Coming-of-Age Ceremonies in Summer

Heavy snow in winter winter makes it difficult to hold coming-of-age ceremonies in Shirakawa, Gifu Prefecutre, in January,

so the village schedules the event in summer when people head back home for the Bon holidays.

【訳例】

冬の大雪は、岐阜県白川村で1月に成人式を開催することを難しくするので、

村は、人々がお盆休みのために故郷に帰省する 夏に その行事を予定しています。

【一口メモ】

❑ 形式目的語：S＋V＋O＋C の O が長い［that節（名詞節）や to不定詞（名詞的用法）］場合、形式目的語の it を置き、真の目的語を C のあとに置くことがあります。

※この構文には make, find, think, consider などの動詞が使われます。

❑ 関係副詞：when は 関係副詞で、summer がどんな夏なのかを説明しています。

［ The village schedules the event in summer.］＋

［ People head back home in summer for the Bon holidays.］

2つ目の文の〈in summer〉を〈when〉に変えて、

→  The village schedules the event in summer when people head back home for the Bon holidays.
