「ストリーツ・オブ・ミネアポリス」は、2026年1月、アメリカ・ミネアポリスで、移民税関捜査局（ICE）による取締りの中で市民2人が命を落とした事件をきっかけに生まれた曲です。ブルース・スプリングスティーンはこの出来事に心を強く動かされ、事件から間もなくこの歌を発表しました。この曲は、悲しみや人への思いやりを通して、「社会で起きていることを他人ごとにせず、自分の問題として考えることの大切さ」を静かに伝えています。

近道はない。英語は基礎基本の積み重ね

新しい英文に接したとき、意味は分からなかったら、ただひたすらにインスピレーションのひらめきを待ったり、想像力とフィーリングだけに頼ったりするのでなく、地道に一歩一歩考えていかなくてはいけません。

しかし、学生はそのための方法を教わらず、結果としての訳だけを、なぜこれが正しいのか、この訳でなければいけないのかの説明なしに与えられているのではないでしょうか。

そういう学生が、原文と無関係に訳を暗記するという非能率というより無意味な学習法に陥るのは当然です。その結果学生が英語を投げてしまったり、勉強しても勉強してもというのは、この場合暗記しても暗記してもというのと同じ意味なのです。

勉強しても勉強しても力がつかないという悩みを持つようになっても学生だけを責めるわけにはいかないと私は思うのです。
